Asim Ali

Dr. Asim Ali is the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at the Hospital for Sick Children and holds the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. Following an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, he completed his medical degree and residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. He then went on to further postgraduate training with separate fellowships in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and Cornea and External Disease at Washington University, St. Louis, USA. Since returning to Canada to establish a practice at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, his clinical work and research have focused on anterior segment disorders in children including cataract, glaucoma and congenital abnormalities, with a special emphasis on corneal transplant and external disease. He is co-developer (with colleagues G. Borschel and R. Zuker) of the minimally invasive approach to corneal neurotization using sural nerve grafts. He holds the endowed Mira Godard Chair in Vision Research at the Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Ali is also the Co-Director of the Paediatric Cornea Fellowship as well as Director of the Paediatric Ophthalmology Service at the University of Toronto.
